HD Radio Review

HD Radio real time traffic and news

HD Radio is allowing more digital content to be broadcast. The amount and type of dynamic digital content that can be provided over automobile in-dash systems and portable navigation devices using content transmitted via HD Radio is increasing greatly.

Digital content company Navteq said at the NAB Show that using HD digital radio, it can now provide what is known as “LocationPoint Advertising,” which includes detailed sound, graphics, and even mobile coupons.

Currently, almost 1,500 radio stations are part of the Broadcast Traffic Consortium. Recently the group continues to expand and it has attracted four new broadcast ownership groups to its ranks and it has also grown to provide more markets with Navteq traffic data and digital signals transmitted using either analog FM RDS or HD Radio.

The new companies that have joined include Regent Communications, Journal Broadcasting, Saga Communications and Corus Entertainment, which brings the number of broadcast organizations in the consortium to 16. The total covered market has grown to cover over 80 U.S. markets with RDS and over 70 markets with HD Radio traffic data.

BTC uses both HD radio and RDS  to deliver real-time Navteq Traffic information and data, such as current weather and gas prices, to in dash car radios and portable navigation devices.

This new and growing service is bound to help accelerate consumer HD Radio receiver penetration and create new revenue for the radio industry.
