JBL On Time 400iHD Radio Review

Here are some ratings, pro, cons, and other comments for the JBL On Time 400iHD Clock Radio. This review information is consolidated from multiple sources.

Pros: Supports iTunes tagging. Battery backup. Two 6-watt drivers and a 6-watt tweeter provide plenty of highs. Supports all iPods. The JBL On Time 400iHD has an easy-to-read display that has an automatic dimmer that will adjust itself to the brightness of your room. High-quality audio performance at reasonable volumes. The JBL also has full iPod navigation via the remote control, which is something many docks lack.

Cons: Bass could be improved. No support for iPhone. The controls are not always responsive. Only 5 radio presets.

Comments : Reviews show that performance is a mixed bag for the JBL On Time 400iHD. The buttons on this tabletop radio unit and on the remote control are not always responsive. In addition, the audio quality in the iPod mode is not as great as we would expect from a $300 radio unit. Overall, the music does sound clear and reasonably warm, but both the high-end sparkle and bass are lacking. Reviews also show that the JBL unit could use some EQ enhancement options. On the positive side, the radio reception is excellent, and in particular the HD radio sounds just great. The iTunes Tagging functionality, whereby the song information is saved to your iPod, works very well, though there is a short lag between the tags being stored and then being sent to the iPod.

The JBL On Time 400iHD has a full menuing system with text that enables users to set the alarms, clock, and other dimensions of its performance. This radio also comes with three external antennas, a wall power adapter, and an audio cable. Three AAA batteries can be placed in the bottom for backing up the alarm and clock, but the batteries are not included. It works only with iPods and is not iPhone-certified.

The sound quality of the speakers is strong, but only at reasonable levels. This is not a system you can use to deejay your next loud party; the low-end frequencies will consistently distort if you crank the volume too high.
