A review of the Sony XDR-S3HD HD Table Radio.

Some of the pros and cons of the Sony Tabletop HD Radio, as pulled from multiple websites, include the following:

Pros: Stylish appearance. Easy to use controls. All reviews indicate good sound quality. Does a good job in picking and locking onto HD Radio signals. The display is very legible and shows a wealth of information, such as song name and artists. The sound quality is top notch. Easy to use, and well designed menu system.

Cons: No CD or satellite radio support. Only a single, rather than dual, alarm clock. Cooling fan may be slightly too loud, causing a “hissing” sound.

Comments : The Sony XDR-S3HD lowers the price for HD Radio, and does a great job in not compromising on quality in doing so.

Regarding sound quality, the Sony XDR-S3HD delivered above average performance. If this Sony radio does have a weakness, it is that the bass is not particularly powerful. Even with the bass turned all the way up, some music wasn't packing a big punch.

Also, like many tabletop and clock radio type units, reviews indicate the Sony XDR-S3HD doesn't deliver much in the way of stereo separation. While the radio does offer a surround sound option, it just tends to add more echo and warble to the music. Just to be clear, these issues are true of nearly all tabletop radios of this size in which the speakers are just a few inches apart.

While the Polk Audio I-Sonic may have more bass, wider dispersion, and it does have overall better overall sound, the Polk does cost 2-3 times more than the Sony. That price difference puts the XDR-S3HD's performance in much better perspective.
