Digital Radio Lands At Wal-Mart (from www.forbes.com)
The traditional radio industry, faced with the prospects of slow-to-no growth, are staking a lot of hope on digital radio--a high tech offering that's supposed to give listeners more choice and better sound.
But until they can make this pitch directly to consumers--who will need to buy new radios to listen in--they'll have hard time making any progress.
By that yardstick, things may start improving for digital radio's prospects Monday, when Wal-Mart (nyse: WMT - news- people) begins stocking them. The nation's largest retailer is selling a JVC in-dash car stereo that receives HD Radio broadcasts, the terrestrial digital radio standard approved by the Federal Communications Commission in 2002.
The radio will retail for about $190 at 1,989 of Wal-Mart's 3,331 U.S. stores where HD broadcasts are already available.
