HD Radios in cars
J.D. Power and Associates completed a survey of over 19,000 consumers who have either leased or bought a car in the past five years. Reviews of the survey indicate that HD digital radio has about 5 percent penetration in those new cars. Among the vehicles that have an HD car radio on board, over 50 percent of those had the technology installed at the factory.
That 5 percent figure is stats for 2008, but the percent should be rapidly increasing in the years ahead, as Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Jaguar, Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Mercedes, Mini, Kia, Scion, and Volvo have all agreed to add HD Radio in current and future models.
Compare this from stats from previous years. The percentage of HD radios in cars in 2007 and 2006 were 7 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
Among owners of car HD Radio, the percentage of users getting their HD Radio from a new-vehicle factory installation increased greatly in the 2008 survey at the expense of retail-aftermarket sales and car-dealer installs. Among the 5 percent of vehicles that had HD Radio, 55 percent were equipped with factory-installed HD Radio, which is more than double and up from the previous poll’s 22 percent. Compare that to car-dealer installs which went down to 7 percent from almost 36 percent, while the share held by other retail outlets and automotive specialty stores fell to 26 percent from 34 percent.
