HD Radio Review

HD Radio Content

HD Digital Radio multicasting can more than double the number of choices available on free digital FM radio. HD Radio technology enables all the  FM broadcasters the ability to offer more than one program stream on its existing spectrum.
Stations are using their HD2 multicast channels in various ways, including to experiment with new music, new programming, news formats, showcase up and coming young artists and local bands, offer non-English language programming, and much, much more.

Multicast Content Examples

After conducting various reviews, some examples of the innovative ways broadcasters are using this multicasting feature today are:

Clear Channel Inc. has been one of the most, if not the most, aggressive broadcasters when it comes to rolling out the HD2 multicasting. Now more than 100 of the groups FM stations are now offering HD2 programming, and it is featuring a range of diverse formats. Examples of this include: New York City’s WKTU-FM HD2 radio channel features the only country music station; Detroit’s WMXD-FM’s HD2 Digital Radio Channel offers its listeners Gospel music; KABQ-FM in Albuquerque HD2 Digital channel plays Spanish Oldies.

In Los Angeles, CBS Radio 97.1 Free FM is currently airing Los Angeles Dodgers baseball games on its HD2 channel. KFWB radio has been the radio home of the LA Dodgers since the 2003 season and KFWB continues to broadcast games, which is great for LA as it means HD Radio receiver owners in LA now have the option of listening to the hometown team on either side of the FM or AM dial.

In Detroit Michigan, Greater Media has recently launched a total of three multicast channels, including an HD channel called Riff2, which is a multicast channel of it legendary rock station WRIF-FM that features a steady diet of local music. As an example of its commitment to local music, Detroit’s Riff2 has featured an all White Stripes Weekend, and other special programming for various acts, to celebrate the band’s series of hometown concerts.

Miami’s ’Beasley Broadcast Groups WKIS-FM offers a station called Gretchen 99.9 HD2. A review will show it is inspired by country music sensation Gretchen Wilson. The southern type rock-flavored format on station Gretchen complements the mainstream country programming on WKIS’s main channel. The multicasting station also features an HD3 channel that takes advantage of HD Radio data streams and streams weather information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Across this great nation, National Public Radio is now offering its numerous member stations various programmed music formats for their multicasting channels. Stations offered include classical, jazz, electronic, triple-A and folk. Nearly 400 of the NPR member stations are in the process of upgrading to HD Radio digital technology.
