Pros: Integrated rechargeable battery. Batteries last about 5 hours. An SD card slot for MP3 players also is standard. Splash-proof casing allows the Coby HDR-700 to be used for indoor or outdoor use. Very good reception. Some reviews indicate it picked up an HD Radio station over 40 miles away. Does a good job of picking up signal inside building.
Cons: The Coby has no digital display dimmer. There is no treble or bass control. Limited menu options.
Additional Review Info : The Colby HDR-700 portable radio is a knockoff of the Revo Pico, a popular Wi-Fi/DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio from in England. Coby, very smartly, said, "Gimme one of these radios and make it an HD Radio."
The Colby radio, which carries a "Design by Revo" label, is about 4 inches wide and deep, 6 1/2 inches tall, and has a splash-resistant coating as well as a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts about five hours.
The HDR-700 has just a single 2-inch speaker that is situated below a set of controls that are flanking a manual tuning dial that goes round and round, endlessly, till you reach the desired station. It also has an auto-search feature, that is activated by pressing the tuning dial, which will seek HD Radio channels only, shown on the LCD display in this style: 102.9-1 and 102.9-2.
Reviews show the Colby portable radio couldn't quite match the performance of Tivoli Audio's $220 PAL portable AM-FM (no HD) radio at pulling in the weakest radio signals, but the Colby sounded just as good. An "M-Port" on the Coby's front panel also serves as an auxiliary input for an iPod or other device.
The HDR-700's only misstep is failing to include a built-in AM antenna. To get AM digital radio reception, you must insert a bulky AM loop antenna into the back panel of the unit.
Thinking of buying an HD or portable radio? The answer, for the HDR-700, is an unhesitating yes. A great unit, especially for the price.
The Coby HDR-700 is the first-ever cordless HD Radio receiver. It offers huge sound from its compact design. This take it on the go radio system allows users to tune in to static free HD digital radio broadcasts wherever and whenever they wish.
