A Bill Has Been Introduced to Mandate HD-Compatible Radio Receivers

Congress has introduced a bill that would require radio and satellite receiver manufacturers to include HD Digital radio in all radio receivers sold in the U.S.. They would all need the ability to receive HD Radio signals

Senator Markey said that reviews show that millions of Americans depend on local broadcast radio for sports, news, public safety bulletins, traffic reports, weather, and other information. As the broadcast radio industry migrates to digital radio broadcasting technology, this much needed legislation will ensure that all consumers are able to readily receive free service through consumer electronics products that are now otherwise receiving satellite digital audio radio as well as traditional AM or FM stations.

Senator Markey said that his bill seeks to review and address the long-term competitive health of local radio stations, all the while ensuring that their local, digital services are readily received by all radio consumers.
